Alumni Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the University request my social security number? How do I limit access to my social security number?

The social security number is requested as the best and most effective way to uniquely identify you for the purpose of accurately processing and maintaining your educational records. This number is restricted to internal University use for the following: matching admission applications with ACT or GRE scores, matching admission status with housing agreements or financial aid, maintenance of your academic record, providing loan verification, and obtaining transcripts before and after graduation. To request information on limited access of the social security number, please contact the Student Service & Referral Center, Moulton Hall, Room 107, Campus Box 2202, Normal, IL 61790-2202 or (309) 438-2188 prior to the tenth day of class.

I walked in Commencement. Doesn’t that mean I graduated?

No. Commencement is the celebration of the end of your schooling. Graduation is the official awarding of the degree after Evaluations has audited your record for requirement completion. That audit does not happen until after final grades are turned in, which happens after the commencement ceremony.

Where should a student report a name or address change?

Due to the danger of identity theft, persons who wish to change their first, middle, or last names on their transcripts or diplomas must provide a copy of their marriage license, a court order, or a dissolution decree certifying their name change. Please send a photocopy of one of these documents with your written or faxed request. We cannot accept a copy of your current driver’s license or social security card. Please be sure to sign this request. Without your signature, we cannot process your name change.

The student should complete a name and/or address change form at the Student Service & Referral Center in Moulton Hall, Room 107 any time the name, local address, home address or parent address changes. Address changes can also be completed by the student through the iCampus Portal or reported via telephone to the Student Service & Referral Center or by sending the request to the Student Service & Referral Center, Campus Box 2202, Normal, IL 61790-2202.
