Common Registration Error Messages

The following are error messages which you may encounter while registering. After each error message is a brief description of the error and method for resolution.

  1. Course is closed  — There are no seats available for the section you requested. Try another section or one of your alternate courses. In the event that a required course in your academic program is closed and you have Junior, Senior, or Graduate standing, please contact your departmental advisor.
  2. Course is canceled  — The specific section you requested has been canceled. Try another section or one of your alternate courses.
  3. A time conflict exists  — The section you requested meets at the same time as a course already scheduled.  Try another section or drop the scheduled section that is conflicting.
  4. Inappropriate number of variable hours  — This is a variable semester hour course. A specific number of hours must be entered.
  5. Section is limited to majors only  — Only students with a specific major are allowed to register for this section. Try a non-major section or one of your alternates. You may also contact your advisor.
  6. Section is limited to Honors only  — Students must be officially enrolled in the Honors Program at Illinois State. Try another section or one of your alternate courses.
  7. Prerequisite has not been met  — The course you requested has a prerequisite which you have not taken. Consult the Course Planner on the iCampus Portal , your advisor, your catalog, or the Student Service and Referral Center, Moulton 107 for assistance.
  8. The request will take you over the maximum semester hours allowed this semester  — Undergraduate students are permitted to enroll for a maximum of 17 semester hours and graduate students are permitted for a maximum of 15 semester hours. Contact your advisor for assistance.
  9. You have not earned the required number of hours  — This course requires a specific number of hours earned before enrollment is permitted in this class.  Contact your advisor for assistance.
  10. You do not have the required grade-point average  — The department has established a minimum grade-point average for enrollment in this course. Contact your advisor for assistance.
  11. You are not eligible for the course level  — The department has determined that a student should have reached a certain class level (i.e., sophomore, junior) before being able to enroll in this class. Contact your advisor for assistance.
  12. You are not eligible for 400 or 500 level courses  — Courses numbered 400 and above are intended for students who have been admitted to an advance degree program.  Contact your advisor or the Graduate School for assistance.
  13. You have repeated this course once  — You can only enroll in a course at Illinois State twice. Contact your advisor for assistance.
  14. You are ineligible to take this course on the Credit/No Credit option  — The credit/no credit option (pass/fail) restricts enrollment in a course due to certain rules. You cannot elect the credit/no credit option if:
  15. a. you are a first semester freshman.
    b. you are on academic probation.
    c. you already have 6 semester hours on the credit/no credit option.
    d. you have accumulated more than 25 semester hours on the credit/no credit option.
    e. the course will be used for credit towards your major or minor.
    f. the course is English 101.
    g. the course is a General Education course in the inner and middle core.
    h. you are a graduate student with limited exceptions.

  16. College of Business enrollment policy violated  — One of the following College of Business guidelines has been violated.
    1. You must have earned 60 semester hours by the first day of classes to register for any 200 level College of Business course.
    2. You must have earned 75 semester hours by the first day of classes to register for any 300 level College of Business course.
    3. If you have not met the College of Business continuation requirements, you may not exceed more than 25% (30 semester hours) of your coursework within the College of Business.
    4. You are a graduate Student-at-Large enrolling for a College of Business course.
  17. Not for Credit if had  — If credit has been received for a course that has similar content, then registration is NOT permitted. Contact your advisor for assistance.
