Remember that Illinois State University requirements are less restrictive than general IAI policy as stated on the website. It is important to remind students planning to transfer out of Illinois State that they will be subject to the requirements of their transfer institution.
Transfer students who have satisfactorily completed some courses within the Illinois Transferable General Education Core are allowed to complete this program by enrolling in approved IAI courses at Illinois State. (See eligibility information above.)
For those students eligible to complete the Core, a transfer course articulated as an Illinois State University course approved for the Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum will be utilized toward the Core. Any course from a participating school approved by an IAI curriculum panel may be used even if not articulated to an Illinois State course. Acceptance and placement of transfer credit from a non-participating IAI institution as an elective is only applicable to meet Illinois Transferable General Education Core (IAI) requirements at Illinois State University.
Courses taken that were later approved for the transferable General Education Core can be used to fulfill requirements at Illinois State University. Example: A student took POS 140 before it was approved for IAI. Can the student count the course to satisfy IAI Core requirements? Yes.
If Illinois State University has granted credit for an IAI approved course by CLEP or AP examination, that credit will be applied toward fulfillment of the IAI transferable core. Illinois State will accept a completed IAI General Education Core even if the transfer institution has applied AP or CLEP credit in a manner different than Illinois State policy. If the IAI General Education Core is not completed before the student transfers, Illinois State's policy on AP and CLEP will apply. Example: A student was awarded Comp I and Comp II credit through CLEP by a community college. The student transfers to Illinois State before completing the IAI General Education Core. Will Illinois State apply Comp I and Comp II to the IAI Core? No. Illinois State does not accept CLEP credit for English or Math.
If a student satisfactorily completes the objectives of a General Education Core area but earns fewer hours than required, the remaining hours for that area can be waived. However, students must complete the minimum of 37 hours and the number of courses required in each area of the Core. Example: A student takes two 3-hour science courses, one of which is a Life Science and one of which is a Physical Science. At least one of those courses is designated as a laboratory course. Has the student fulfilled the Science area of the Gen Ed Core? Yes. However, the student will have to make up the missing credit hour within the program. Fractional hours can also be waived, but the minimum 37 hour total is still enforced.
A discipline is not a department. Disciplines are the subsections of the broad IAI categories. For example, Communication has two disciplines: writing and oral communication. Physical Science has: Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science, Astronomy, Geology, Physical Geography, and Interdisciplinary. Humanities have: Foreign Language, History, Literature, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Interdisciplinary Humanities. Fine Arts has : Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and Interdisciplinary Arts. Social and Behavioral Science has: Anthropology, Economics, History, Human Geography, Political, Science, Psychology, Sociology, Interdisciplinary Social/Behavioral Science.
Regardless of category placement, a student may count no more than two courses from a single IAI discipline to fulfill the General Education Core Curriculum requirements (the system will look for the first two digits of the SIS number). Example: A student took 3 IAI approved history courses, two that count in Humanities / Fine Arts and one that counts in Social / Behavioral Science. Can he use all three to fulfill IAI Gen Ed Core? No. Only two history courses can count program-wide. Are there any exceptions to this rule? Yes, IAI eligible students under the 1999-2000 and earlier Illinois State Undergraduate Catalogs are not subject to this restriction.
Example: GEO 135 and GEO 140 are both listed as S4 900N. Either GEO 135 or 140 may be used to fulfill Social Science requirement, but not both. Are there any exceptions to this rule? Yes, IAI eligible students under the 1999-2000 and earlier catalogs are allowed to use more than one course listed under a single IAI course number. Always consult the catalog or iTransfer.org for complete IAI course number.
A grade of C is required for C1 (ENG 101) and C3 (ENG 145) beginning summer 1999. Except for C1 & C3, grade of A/B/C/D/CT is acceptable unless restricted by an institutions' catalog (according to our 1999-00 catalog, COM 110 may not be taken pass/fail).
