Teacher Certification Outside Illinois

If you are planning on teaching in another state you will still need to process your Illinois Teaching Certification application. For those students intending to teach outside of the State of Illinois:

  1. Complete the regular teacher certification process [entitlement program, application via ECS or paper form] for an Illinois Teaching Certificate
  2. Register your certificate at any ROE.
  3. Contact the Board of Education in the state you intend to teach in & complete their paper work.
  4. Documents requiring official confirmation of your teacher education training or entitlement program should be sent [mail or fax] to the Evaluations Office [Campus Box 2202 or fax 309-438-2338].
    • Make sure to include your full name [including maiden name], UID, birth date, & graduation date.
    • Include the address of where the document(s) need to be sent – your home address, the State Board of Education, etc.
    • If the document is to be returned to the BOE, make sure all of your information is complete.
  5. Documents requiring information regarding No Child Left Behind legislation, teacher testing, master teacher status, etc. need to be directed to the Illinois State Board of Education
  6. Illinois has reciprocal teaching agreements with the following states [as of 8/1/1995]:
